MLITSD-approved certification for Waterloo Region's booming construction sector. On-site training available for groups across K-W and Cambridge.
Kitchener is in the middle of a construction transformation. The ION LRT line running along King Street from Waterloo through downtown Kitchener has triggered a wave of transit-oriented development that continues to reshape the city's core. Former industrial properties and surface parking lots along the ION corridor are being replaced by mixed-use towers — residential above, commercial at grade — and the cranes keep coming. Downtown Kitchener's revitalization has turned King Street into one of the most active construction zones in southwestern Ontario, with multiple high-rise projects at various stages of completion and new ones breaking ground regularly.
Beyond the downtown core, Kitchener's south end is expanding rapidly. The Bleams Road industrial corridor is filling with new warehousing, logistics, and manufacturing facilities — buildings that require structural steel workers, roofers, and mechanical installers who all need valid Working at Heights certification. Cambridge, just south of Kitchener, adds its own substantial construction pipeline with residential subdivisions, commercial development along the Highway 401 corridor, and industrial expansion in the Hespeler area. Across the Region of Waterloo, the tech sector presence — anchored by companies like Google and Shopify maintaining office space in the area — has driven demand for commercial fit-outs, renovations, and new purpose-built office and lab space that keeps trades busy at every level of the building.
Ontario Regulation 297/13 does not care whether your project is a condo tower on King Street or a warehouse shell in the industrial park — if a worker may use fall protection on a construction project, they need an MLITSD-approved Working at Heights certificate. The Ministry of Labour inspects Waterloo Region job sites regularly, and non-compliance carries real consequences: personal fines for workers, orders against constructors, and project delays that cost everyone money.

It is mandatory for any worker on a construction project who may use a method of fall protection. Under Ontario Regulation 297/13, that includes anyone who might work with a harness, guardrail system, travel restraint, or safety net. In practice, this covers the majority of trades on most construction projects in Kitchener and across Ontario.
Your Working at Heights certificate is valid for 3 years from the completion date. You can renew it by taking the 3.5-hour refresher course before it expires. If the certificate has already lapsed, you will need to complete the full 6.5-hour certification again.
Bring a valid government-issued photo ID and wear closed-toe footwear. Dress in clothes you can move in comfortably — the course includes a practical component where you will be fitted with a harness and inspect fall protection equipment. We provide all training gear. No prior experience is required for the full certification course.
