Working at Heights (WAH) is a mandatory safety training program required under Ontario Regulation 297/13 for any construction worker who may use a method of fall protection. The training covers fall hazards, the hierarchy of fall protection controls, equipment inspection and use, harness fitting, anchor point selection, and emergency rescue planning. It must be delivered by an MLITSD-approved training provider like 4 Your Safety Solutions.
Your WAH certificate is valid for 3 years from the date you complete the training. Before it expires, you can take the shorter refresher course (3.5 hours) to renew it. If your certificate has already expired, you must take the full certification course (6.5 hours) again.
Any worker on a construction project who may use a method of fall protection — including safety harnesses, guardrails, travel restraint systems, or safety nets — must hold a valid WAH certificate. This applies to roofers, ironworkers, formwork carpenters, scaffolders, general labourers, window installers, siding contractors, and anyone else who works above grade on a construction site.
Working at heights without a valid certificate is a violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Both workers and employers can face fines. Ontario has issued penalties ranging from $45,000 to over $150,000 for WAH violations, particularly when injuries or fatalities are involved. Beyond fines, untrained workers face a significantly higher risk of serious injury or death from falls.
